The Administration have cabled us that if the "Burrumbeet" is requisitioned, they regret they have no option but to greatly increase the price for a portion of the local Government's requirements, and, after consulting them, we understand that the proposed rate is considered unworkable by the Government. It would therefore appear to us that we are justified in respectfully recomending to your Committee that ing the interests of the coal supplies of the Colony the "Burrun- beet" should not be requisitioned unless it can be arranged under the Liner Requisition Scheme, for some steamer to take her place on similar terms on the run, and even if this is done we fear an average increase of rates for next year is inevi- table if Japanese tonnage has to be relied on for the fulfil- ment of, say, half the Administration's contracts.
